How to Get Your Full Security Deposit Back When You Move Out

Moving out of an apartment can be difficult and stressful, especially when you know you have a large sum of a security deposit on the line.  In order to have this money returned to you in full, it is expected to have a thoroughly-clean apartment during final inspection.  Check out these tips to help you BEFORE you move out:

  • Kitchen
    • Clean the oven and stove (inside and out)
    • Disinfect the dishwasher
    • Clean inside drawers and on counter surfaces
    • Wash out the sink
    • Remove all food from refrigerator, defrost, and clean the inside
    • Clean the freezer
  • Bathroom
    • Wipe down the walls, counters, and ceiling
    • Scrub the shower and tub
    • Clean out tub and sink drains
    • Clean the drawers, mirrors, and windows
    • Clean the toilet
    • Wash the sink
    • Mop the floors
  • Bedrooms/Living Room
    • Wipe down ceiling fans, furniture, and walls
    • Wash the windows
    • Clean window blinds
    • Clean the floors
  • Exterior
    • Remove any items you have left outside (hanging decorations, bird feeders, deck chairs, etc.)
    • Cut the grass and pull weeds (if applicable, most apartment communities are responsible for this themselves)
    • Sweep and hose down the porch/balcony
    • Sweep out garage (if applicable)
  • One last sweep
    • Take out all trash
    • Remove nails, screws, and tacks from the walls
    • Clean all light fixtures, switches, and outlets (carefully!)
    • Mop/vacuum all floors
    • Take a picture of the cleaned, emptied apartment with dates and times

Do not fear!  This list may look overwhelming, so try to break it down into rooms and plan your cleaning schedule.  It is worth putting in the effort to get your security deposit back in full!
