How to “go green” while renting an apartment

Some apartment communities do not have easy access to recycling and other efficient ways of living.  Not only will you be able to be a part of protecting the environment, you will also have the opportunity to save money in the long run.  Here are a few ways to go green as a renter:

  • Switch out provided lightbulbs for compact fluorescent lightbulbs
  • Use chemical-free and biodegradable cleaners
  • Use power strips in order to cut power when devices are not in use
  • Don’t buy bottled water—instead use a reusable pitcher or bottle that filters tap water for you
  • Use less gas—walk or bike if you live near the Rivergreenway, or consider carpooling or taking public transportation
  • Start a compost pile at the approval of your apartment manager
  • Close vents and doors to rooms not used in order to save on heat/AC
  • Consider growing plants indoors or outdoors, as they help clean the air naturally
  • Seal up small air or water leaks within your apartment that are causing wastefulness
  • Use cold water when washing clothes, as this helps you save 80% on laundry energy
  • When grocery shopping, bring your own reusable tote bags instead of taking home tons of plastic shopping bags.  These also make it easier to take lots of groceries up flights of stairs!
  • Air dry your laundry on a clothes rack rather than using an energy and coin hogging dryer
  • Limit your use of paper products—plates, bowls, cups, silverware, napkins, etc.—and choose reusable products
  • Wait until your dishwasher or washing machine is completely full before using it
  • Ask your apartment manager to start a recycling program or take your recyclables to a local recycling center
